Presented as part of the Walker Art Center’s “Free First Saturdays”
December 1st, 2018 | 10-3pm
This event is Ragamala’s singular expression of the South Indian festival of Navarathri — Kolu, a time when families welcome friends and neighbors into their homes for a communal gathering rooted in the sharing of art. Part installation and part community arts festival, Ode to Navarathri translates a culturally rooted experience from Ranee’s upbringing in Chennai, India, into a universal celebration of art and life.
A traditional tiered display of hand-painted clay figurines and handmade rice flour designs on the floor transform the space into a South Indian living room. Informal performances, hands-on workshops, and a commissioned documentary film about Navarathri celebrations in the Twin Cities highlight the day.
